Toulouse in autumn—a time when the city comes alive in more ways than one. Known as the "Pink City" for its terracotta buildings, it takes on a whole new character this time of year, with the cool breeze in the air and the unmistakable charm of pop-up flea markets dotting parks and squares. Autumn in France isn’t just about falling leaves and cosy cafés—it's also the season of decluttering, where you can spot French families emptying their attics and setting up stalls for the quintessential flea market experience.
For this walk, we ventured to the lesser-known side of the Garonne River, far from the bustling city centre, to explore what life feels like from a local’s perspective. No grand landmarks or tourist crowds, just an authentic slice of Toulousainlife—exactly the kind of discovery that makes filming these walking tours so special. The neighbourhood was relaxed, with the calm quiet streets and locals chatting up at the flea market.
These markets pop up in the autumn like clockwork, offering everything from vintage treasures to quirky odds and ends. It’s a ritual of sorts, where locals clear out their homes and invite you into their memories with each item they sell.
As we continued our walk from the flea market to the more famous Rue du Taur and back to the city centre, the contrast became beautifully clear. On one side of the river, you have the typical sights of Toulouse, but here, across the Garonne, the pace slows down, and you’re reminded that the soul of a city often lies in its quieter corners.
Our goal was to capture that essence—the local vibe that’s hard to find in guidebooks. So, while this walk might not show you the glitzy side of Toulouse, it offers something far more precious: a glimpse into the everyday lives of the locals, where traditions like autumn flea markets bring people together in a wonderfully unpolished and authentic way.
