Behind the Scenes

After a long day of filming, I’d packed up my gear, feeling content with the footage captured. But, as it often happens in Paris, the city has a way of pulling you back in. On a whim, I decided I couldn’t end the day without one final capture—the vibrant, bustling café terraces that are so quintessentially Parisian. Even after hours of filming, the sight of locals sipping wine or coffee, chatting away in the crisp evening air, was too tempting to pass up.

Café terraces aren’t just places to eat or drink in Paris; they’re a window into French culture. This tradition, deeply rooted in French history, is about so much more than simply enjoying a meal or beverage. It’s about embracing life, being part of the city, and engaging in what the French call ''flânerie''—the art of strolling, observing, and soaking in the atmosphere. 

The love for terraces began to bloom during the 19th century when Paris underwent a transformation under Baron Haussmann, who redesigned much of the city. Wide boulevards and open spaces invited cafés to expand onto the sidewalks, and with that, the terrace culture took off. It became a symbol of the "Belle Époque", where artists, writers, and thinkers gathered to debate, create, and enjoy the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Over time, it’s evolved into a beloved Parisian pastime. Whether it’s under the rain of spring, heat of summer, the cool breeze of autumn, or even the chill of winter, there’s always a terrace full of Parisians, bundled up and seated outside. The magic lies in its consistency—no matter the weather, you’ll find locals enjoying the outdoors, watching the world go by. 

It’s woven into the very fabric of French life. It’s where people meet to unwind after work, where lovers linger, where ideas are born, and where time seems to slow down just enough to remind you to enjoy the moment.

That’s why, even after I thought the day’s filming was over, I knew I couldn’t miss this essential slice of Parisian culture. With the cameras back up, I captured the beautiful chaos of Les Halles and Rue Montorgueil’s café terraces. The murmur of conversation, the clinking of glasses, and the glow of streetlights—it was Paris in all its evening glory.

And so, what was meant to be a quick wrap-up became one of my favourite moments of the day. Because, after all, no Parisian experience is complete without the café terrace—and now, you’ll get to experience it through this night tour too.
